Can You Make Real Change with Your Slow Living Lifestyle?
Super Simple Seven – Slow Living Resolutions
Alright, it might all feel a little grandiose, and you won’t change the world overnight but small changes can change your world, or at least how you feel about it.
And what about the bigger picture? Revolutions are usually categorised as radical change, a concept which can seem daunting and impossible, especially if you allow yourself to spiral, thinking about big issues – climate change, ethical working practices, pollution.. anyone else feeling anxious?
But radical change comes from people making *small* daily decisions that, while they may feel inconsequential, have an impact.
Your Seven Simple Slow Living Tips
We say ‘simple’ but changing your mindset and forming new habits is never easy. But there’s fun to be had on the journey, and being kind to yourself and making the effort is half the battle.
1.
DON’T BUY IT YOU DON’T NEED IT
And once it’s new, shiny glamour has faded, there’s a good chance you won’t care about it anymore, or love it like something you’ve mindfully considered and saved for.
Can you shift your mindset to start here? If you can, you’ll find the things you do buy after proper consideration are much more you and will end up far more cherished.
2.
SECOND
HAND
FIRST
Clothes and furniture are brilliant to buy second-hand. With countless platforms, charities, and shops offering original one-off pieces or items you can make your own by upcycling.
For every item of clothing bought second-hand instead of new a year, CO2 emissions would be lowered by two bn lbs (equal to 76 million cars being taken off the road for a day) (data: @thredup)
3.
FIVE
NEW FASHION
FINDS
ONLY
Only buy five new items of clothing this year. This doesn’t include second-hand purchases, underwear (pants are essentials), or *genuine* workout gear.
If this feels anxiety-inducing, hold-tight, we’ll give you our top tips for making this a pleasurable experience!
4.
REPAIR & REUSE
Every year we throw away millions of items that could be mended. Clothes and household furniture are two of the most common. Make a shift away from a disposable mindset.
5.
CONSIDER
THE BRANDS
YOU SUPPORT
Everything from fashion to homeware, bank accounts to cleaning products. Small but intentional decisions on which brands (and values) you support make a huge difference.
Say no to Shein and Temu’s shady practices, and have fun discovering purpose-driven brands aligned with your values and style. We know it’s a minefield, but we’ll help by signposting slow and sustainable resources, brands and products.
6.
PLANT ONE THING
Or more, if you can!
Plant a tree in your garden, grow wildflowers on your street, get involved in a community project, or sponsor a tree at @treeforstreets.
We’ll share some of our favourite and easy ways to give nature and the environment a helping hand.
7.
LOVE YOUR LEFTOVERS
Food waste is bad for the planet and your bank account, plus cleaning out the fridge is irksome. So do as @hubbub suggests and find some go-to recipes for your leftovers each week; committing to a few weekday curries, pizzas, or omelettes will eliminate the surplus!
We’ll share some of our favourite recipes over the coming weeks.
And for those you just can’t budge (no judgement) compost! We love @Hotbin
