Buck Trends: Well, micro-trends anyway
BUCK TRENDS. Well, micro-trends, anyway. Staying up to date with the latest TikTok fad and the must-have product is exhausting and, (dare we say it?), boring. You have more enjoyable things to do. We know this. You know this. The only people who care that you have the latest faddy thing are probably those trying to sell it to you. Fast fashion, fuelled by influencers. Not demure. Not cutesy. Definitely not mindful.
Micro-Trend-Core
Micro-trends, cores, fads (it’s all much of a muchness) have risen sharply over the past years, ignited by Covid and fuelled by social platforms like TikTok. On the surface, it can feel harmless; after all, dressing to express an aspect of our personality is nothing new. Dressing to feel sexy, academic, or cosy is a way of signing to the world how you want to be perceived, who you are and how you feel in that moment. It can give you confidence and impact how others treat you. Signposting our souls via our clothing choices is what style and self-expression truly is, if you are doing it authentically.
When to Depend on Trends
So, when are trends good? When they serve you and not someone else. If a trend has sparked the style synapses and you’ve dug out a long-forgotten look from the back of your wardrobe and made it feel fresh again, then great. Perhaps it will encourage you to rescue something from the local charity shop. Then there are timeless trends. They are just that, timeless – Checks- CHECK. Trench coats- in the capsule. Florals- it must be Spring again. There is something comforting in revisiting safe, style spaces, with your own twist, of course. Nostalgic dressing is nothing new.
The Ugly-Rithm of Trends
And the dark side of trends? Those dastardly dopamine hits, but the momentary pleasure quickly dissipates, and you and your bank account will be left feeling empty. And more significant than that? The terrifying loop of real-time fashion is destructive. Something that begins as innocent and inventive (come on the mob wife aesthetic was such fun) gains traction online and fuels the quick production of poor quality, often dangerous, unethically made products predominantly from polyester.
Top tips:
- BUCK TRENDS, use them; don’t let them use you.
- Find your own style;
- Dress for your mood and not for the algorithm.
